So the market has already saturated rather quickly. Prices are falling in line more with expectations and in some cases below. This mainly has to do with the huge amount of product that has been opened so far. Everyone trying to get out from underneath it.

Another factor is the size of the prospect auto checklist in which has a dozen or so more then years past.

An additional component to factor in is when everyone receives their cards from breaks next week. This will further dilute the market even further adding to the amount of great buys.

If you prospect there is no time like the present to pick up guys your after. Especially colored variations. After this month you will not see this amount of product/variations in the market place for such a great value.

Undeniably the biggest release of the season has already sent the baseball card market screaming in a new direction.

Here is a quick snapshot of how the rankings have changed in just one day after the release of Bowman 2014.

The known quantities(Bryant, Abreu, Franco, Appel) are all up top on the list. Beyond that it is interesting to see where the other players on the list fit in.

Keep in mind It will still take a week for the market to saturate before the true impact will be felt in the rankings. But this list should give you a head start in where the market is trending on these prospects.

The prospect market in the hobby is teeming right now with spring training in full swing. In doing some research on top prospect lists I came across a great article on “Beyond the Boxscore”(View Here). They broke down all the top 2014 preseason prospect lists(Baseball America,Baseball Prospecus,MLB.com…) and ranked them using a point system. So i thought it would be interesting to see how the consensus list compares to our Cardboard Tracker rankings. Keep in mind our rankings are based on current marketplace popularity. I then took it one step further an added the price ranges for each players 1st Bowman Chrome team affiliated auto to help get perspective on value vs rank.

The results are pretty interesting in terms of being able to pick up on some market inefficiencies.

Here is some initial takeaways I get after looking at this comparison:

  • Team bias seems to favor heavily in collecting once you get outside the top 20 compared to these lists.(ie: the padres prospects are dead weight)
  • The prospect lists themselves tend to really undervalue/play it safe with last years crop of draft picks in the rankings. Where the hobby is already taking chances. Which could probably be stated for most years.
  • 10 players in the consensus top 50 with auto’s priced under $20 and around 17-20 players have autos on the top 100 list can be had for sub $10
  • And most importantly why haven’t I bought more Gausman.

I thought it would be a fun exercise to break down the variations and raw/graded cards of specific players. This should help to give some perspective on when to grade as well as where potential market inefficiencies may lie. As I do more of these we should be able to see what kind of average multipliers are used for calculating pricing.

So first on the list is non other than current hobby juggernaut that is Byron Buxton. We will use his holy grail 2013 Bowman Chrome Auto for this exercise.

2013 Byron Buxton Bowman Chrome Prospect Auto (BCA-BB)

Raw(ungraded) Base Refractor Blue Gold Orange
Price Range $135-$150 $200-$215 $330-$375 $1,000 $1,350
Median cost $142.5 $207.5 $352.5 $1000 $1350
% Increase From Base 45.6% 147.4% 601.8% 847.4%
x Base Price 1.46 2.47 7.02 9.47

BGS 9.5 Base Refractor Blue Gold Orange
Price Range  $185-$200 $300-$350 $505-$535 $1105-$1135 $1,530
Median cost $192.5 $325 $520 $1120 $1530
% Increase From Base 68.8% 170.1% 481.8% 694.8%
x Graded Base 1.69 2.70 5.82 7.95
% Increase From Raw Value 35.1 56.6% 47.5% 12.0% 13.3%
x Raw Value 1.4 1.6 1.5 1.1 1.1

For the BGS 10 data beyond the base there wasn’t a lot to pull from in terms of data. So I set up the table to coincide with the “x Graded Base” multiplier from the BGS 9.5. Truly it comes down to what someone is willing to pay and this table is more of a estimate/guideline of what the expected price(s) may be. Population can play a huge factor here as well.

BGS 10 Base Refractor Blue Gold Orange
Median cost $430 $726.7 $1161 $2502.6 $3418.5
x Graded Base 1.69 2.7 5.82 7.95

This years Bowman Sterling is pretty loaded with this years draft picks as well as some top prospects sprinkled in. There really isn’t anything I feel compares to the value you get from a box of Sterling. 18 Autos(5-6 of them #’d) breaks down to about $13-$14 an auto per box. Even though the colored variations don’t rise in price as much as Bowman Chrome’s, there is still an opportunity to hit something pretty good.

Julio Urias and Gosuke Katoh first MLB auto’s have been high demand so far.

Buxton’s are I feel a steal in the $40-$45 range which is about 1/3 the cost of his Chrome’s.

Marvin Jones (CIN)

Current Rank: 137
7-Day Change +180

Marvin Jones with four touchdown catches on Sunday set a Bengals single game record. Jones has really come on these past few weeks to give Andy Dalton a field stretching sure handed threat to compliment A.J. Green.

Projected to be a mid-second to third round pick on many analysts draft boards but slipped down to the fifth round. He put up great numbers at Cal during his college career despite not having a quality QB to throw to him.

Market wise you could of loaded up cheaply on his cards with most auto’s going in the $2-$4 range a few weeks ago. It will be interesting to see where the price heads in the weeks to come if he continues to shine.

Jones is pretty well covered through Panini’s products with most of them being sticker auto’s. The Contenders Cracked Ice Variations being the most desired.

The Leaf products he’s in are nice because they are all on card auto’s. The 1/1′s could do very well here.

Topps really missed the boat here, only putting Jones auto’s in Magic, Valor and Turkey Red.

Case Keenum (HOU)

Current Rank: 25

With Matt Schaub down and the Texans looking for a spark this week they turn to hometown hero Case Keenum. No doubt it will be a tough first game going into KC who are undefeated with a revitalized and loud fan base. Keenum had alot of experience in big games during his time in college so he may be up for the task.

Keenum came into the league as an undrafted free agent out of Houston in 2012. He had a prolific passing career in college throwing for over 5000 yards three times, becoming the first college player to do so. The knock on him coming out of college was his height and the offense he ran being the main reasons for going undrafted.

Lots of inventory became available with whispers of him getting the nod over Yates earlier in the week. Stuff is going through the roof. He’s covered pretty well throughout most of the releases last year. The Exquisite and Contenders being his most desirable cards.

Thaddeus Lewis (BUF)

Current Rank: 293
7-Day Change +203

SInce E.J. Manuel is out for the an extended period of time the Bills have turned the reins over to practice squad QB Thad Lewis. Lewis leap frogs rookie QB Jeff Tuel on the depth chart to get the start. This makes sense given Lewis has made one career NFL start last season with the Browns and his familiarity with the offensive system. Look for the Bill’s to be primarily run heavy against the Bengals this Sunday to minimize the chances of Lewis turning the ball over.

Lewis came into the league as an undrafted free agent out of Duke in 2010. He has spent the previous three seasons with St. Louis and Cleveland. In Cleveland last year he made his NFL debut in week 17 against the steelers, with both Brandon Weeden and Colt McCoy out with injuries. Although he left the game late with a hard hit he looked good against the top ranked defense.

This is another great story of a players cards you couldn’t get rid of a couple weeks ago to being unable to find now. Most of his BuyItNow’s were picked up the day of the announcement. On COMC low priced auto’s were bought up and marked up for flipping. Look to see alot of 1 day auctions setup saturday to take advantage of the potential run after the game sunday.
